California Gems

3/4 cup margarine
1 cup brown sugar
1-3/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups rolled oats
1 egg beaten
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons lemon juice
4 tablespoons water (more if needed)
1 cup chopped nuts
1-1/2 cups raisins or dates

Utensils: 1 large mixing bowl, medium mixing bowl, 9 x 13 x 2 inch.

Preheat oven to 300F. In a large mixing bowl cream margarine with sugar. Add flour and salt. Mix well. Add oats and Mix Well. Press half the mixture into a greased 9 x l3x 2 inch pan.

In a medium mixing bowl combine beaten egg with sugar. Add remaining ingredients and combine until mixture spreads nicely. Spread onto crumb mixture in baking pan. Pat or sprinkle on remaining crumbs. Bake in a 300F. oven. Cut into squares and serve.
