Fig Almond Bars

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 cup sugar
1 cup fig preserves, not whole
1 tablespoon butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sliced almonds

Preheat oven to 350F. In a mixing bowl, beat flour, sugar, butter and shortening. Pat into the bottom of pan, 1/2 up the sides of an ungreased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake at 350F for 15-18 minutes or until lightly browned. For topping beat egg, sugar, preserves, butter and vanilla in a mixing bowl until smooth. Spread over hot crust. Sprinkle with almonds. Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes. Cool.
