Drain pineapple, reserving 1/2 cup pineapple syrup. In a large skillet, melt butter; blend in sugar, cornstarch, salt and nutmeg. Add reserved pineapple syrup and the lime slices. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; boil one minute. Lightly mix in yams, pineapple chunks and cherries. Simmer uncovered 5 to 10 minutes.
4 to 6 servings.
